by Will Archer, the lead Pastor at POVA Church
As a Pastor in Virginia, I have witnessed thousands of families’ aspirations and struggles as they strive to provide the best for their children. One of the most pressing concerns I hear is the desire for equitable access to high-quality education.
I strongly support Virginia’s Opportunity Scholarship Program, a new initiative designed to expand educational opportunities for families who need them most. For many in our community and my congregation, this financial assistance represents a pathway to opportunity and empowerment.
The idea behind the Opportunity Scholarship Program is simple:
Every child deserves access to an education that works for them.
The Virginia Opportunity Scholarships will provide $5,000 scholarships for 10,000 low-income Virginia families and not take a single dollar from existing public school funding. Supporting the Opportunity Scholarship Program is not about choosing one type of school over another. It’s about affirming that every child learns differently and deserves access to an education that unlocks their potential and prepares them for a fulfilling future. It addresses systemic inequities and ensures no family is left without options simply because of their income level.
Our local public schools are an excellent fit for some, providing robust resources and dedicated teachers. However, for others, particularly in underserved areas like the ones I have served in over the past 30 years, some public schools have struggled to meet the diverse needs of some students. This is by no means a reflection on the incredible dedication of public school teachers or administrators but a recognition of the fundamental systemic challenges that disproportionately affect marginalized communities.
The Opportunity Scholarship Program is a practical solution rooted in the belief that every child’s potential is worth investing in. As someone deeply invested in the well-being of our community, I believe this scholarship program is a step toward addressing the broader inequities that too many Virginia families face. Education has always been a cornerstone of opportunity and upward mobility. Yet systemic barriers have kept these opportunities out of reach for those who need them most. This program empowers parents, especially those from historically marginalized Virginia communities like Dumfries or Norfolk, by giving them agency in their child’s education.
The program fosters empowerment and inclusion by allowing families to choose a learning environment that aligns with their child’s unique needs – whether that’s a school with smaller class sizes, specialized curricula, or programs tailored to a specific learning style. It ensures that their zip code or family income does not limit children to access the education they need to thrive.
As a Church, we support and directly partner with Blue Ribbon Results Academy with campuses in Dumfries and Norfolk. Both of these incredible Virginia cities have thousands of children from marginalized communities. We are on the ground with these families; we know their names and stories. Education and education access are game changers for our Virginia families in need. I strongly urge policymakers and community leaders to embrace and deliver on this program. By doing so, we reaffirm our commitment to empowerment and opportunity and the belief that every child in Virginia deserves the chance to succeed.
