Del. Nick Freitas, R-Culpeper, announced Thursday night at an event that he will not be seeking reelection to his seat in the House of Delegates this year.

“I am someone that believes that serving elected office is not necessarily supposed to be a lifelong profession,” Freitas said in a social media post late Thursday night.

“Nick is retiring at a time when he is more popular than ever in his district but opening up his seat for a new leader to carry the conservative mantle forward,” said Joe Desilets, a longtime staffer for Freitas.

Freitas is endorsing Karen Hamilton for the Republican nomination. She is married to former VA-07 Republican candidate Cameron Hamilton.

“You’ve never had to ask Karen to fight for what she believes,” Freitas said. “I just think she will be an incredible representative in a time where we need people that are not just going to show up and vote the right way, but actually advocate for the things that we believe.”

The filing deadline for the seat is this week.

“With his popularity and the notoriety of the Hamilton family after Cameron’s campaign last year, I expect Karen will have no issue securing the nomination to succeed Nick,” Desilets said.

HD-62, the district that Freitas currently represents, is a strong Republican district, according to VPAP.

Freitas was first elected to the House in 2015.

He secured the Republican nomination to run against Rep. Abigail Spanberger in 2020 but was unsuccessful in the general election.
