Henrico, Va — Facing a primary challenge, Del. Delores McQuinn, D-Henrico, launched her reelection campaign Tuesday.
McQuinn was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2009. Prior to that, she served on the Richmond City Council and School Board.
“As a member of the House of Delegates, it has been such an honor to do the work,” McQuinn said during her speech.
She referenced the changes that might be coming with a Donald Trump presidency and the need for experienced legislators to navigate the environment.
“There are going to be some major changes and the people we represent are going to look to us for leadership and helping them navigate those changes,” she said.
McQuinn is facing a challenge for the Democratic nomination from Henrico School Board Chair Alicia Atkins – who announced she is running last month with a “laser focus on education, empowerment, and the environment.”
McQuinn was joined Tuesday by many Democratic political heavyweights when making her announcement, including state Sen. Lamont Bagby, Dels. Destiny LeVere Bolling and Rae Cousins, Supervisors Tyrone Nelson and Roscoe Cooper and Commonwealth Attorney Shannon Taylor.
“I can think of no one better to serve this community,” Bolling said. “She is the community.”
McQuinn currently represents House District 81, which encompasses parts of Henrico, Chesterfield and Charles City County. She ran unopposed in 2023.
As for the challenge from Atkins, McQuinn has no problem with it.
“This is a democratic process and she has a right to run,” she said.
