Former Virginia Beach Delegates Cheryl Turpin and Bobby Mathieson endorsed Terry McAuliffe for Governor on Monday alongside a large slate of local officials from the Hampton Roads area.
McAuliffe is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for Governor. He is competing with former Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy (Prince William), Senator Jennifer McClellan (Richmond), Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, and Delegate Lee Carter (Manassas) for the nomination.
“Terry McAuliffe is the leader we need in Virginia during these critical times,” said former Virginia Beach Delegate and former United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Virginia Bobby Mathieson. “As Virginia’s 72nd governor, he fought the Republican majority to make a record investment in education and restore voting rights to more than 173,000 Virginians. We now have an opportunity to go big with Democrats in the majority and Terry will be the leader we need to go big and bold for our Commonwealth’s future.”
In addition to Turpin and Mathieson, Hampton Commonwealth Attorney Anton Bell, Chesapeake Councilwoman Ella Ward, and Hampton School Board Chair John Kilgore, endorsed McAuliffe on Monday.
“This pandemic has only worsened the disparities Black and Brown Virginians face in our economy and in education. We need a leader who recognizes these challenges and has the vision and experience to get real results,” said Chesapeake Councilwoman Ella Ward. “I am proud of Terry’s big and bold vision to make sure communities of color in Virginia are front and center as we recover from COVID-19 and make historic investments in our education system. It is exactly what Virginians in Chesapeake and across the Commonwealth need right now as we work to recover from this crisis.”
McAuliffe has previously announced endorsements from several prominent Hampton Roads Democrats including Senate President Pro-TemporeLouise Lucas (Portsmouth), Senator Lionell Spruill (Norfolk), Delegate Cliff Hayes, Jr. (Chesapeake), Delegate Mike Mullin (Newport News), Delegate Alex Askew (Virginia Beach), Delegate Don Scott (Portsmouth), Delegate Martha Mugler (Hampton), and Delegate Steve Heretick (Portsmouth).
“I’m so proud to receive the support of these Hampton Roads leaders as we continue to grow our strong coalition across the Commonwealth. This is a critical moment in our lives and we must leverage our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to create a more equitable future for all Virginians,” said Terry McAuliffe. “As Virginia’s next governor, I will think big and act boldly to give every Virginia child a world-class education and create economic opportunities that lift up all corners of the Commonwealth.”
