12/10/2020 9:45 a.m. update:

The Commonwealth of Virginia reported 3,915 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday morning and Governor Ralph Northam is expected to issue more restrictions later this afternoon. It is unclear what those restrictions will be. However, we have confirmed that a lockdown is not happening.

Mathews County has seen a total of 184 cases this year. There have been 13 hospitalizations and one death due to COVID-19 complications.

Mathews is currently seeing a seven-day average increase of three new cases per day, however, 10 cases were reported on Thursday. The seven-day average of new daily cases among a population of 100,000 in Mathews results in 30.8, which is 14 points below the statewide average. *For clarification, this number presents the percentage of new cases that WOULD exist in a population of 100,000 in order to compare trends statewide. This is not stating that Mathews County has 100,000 residents.
