This week we highlight previews and predictions for the game along with a thoughtful pice from the Roanoke Times that looks at the performance of the Hokies special teams as they face weekly upheaval.
Game Preview: No. 19 Virginia Tech Set To Take On No. 8 UNC
Chris Coleman over at Sports War wrote a great preview ahead of VT’s matchup against the top-10 UNC Tarheels (Puke).
Here is an interesting tidbit from the article:
“The Hokies have won four games in a row against the Tar Heels dating back to 2016, and there have been some memorable moments for Tech fans in recent years.
“2016: Tech won 34-3 in UNC in a game played in the remnants of a Hurricane.
2017: A 59-7 rout in Blacksburg.
2018: The Hokies drove the field in the final minutes to win.
2019: A dramatic 6OT victory for Tech that will go down as one of the greatest games in Lane Stadium history.“
Virginia Tech’s short-handed special teams units doing ‘admirable job’ in face of weekly upheaval
Mike Niziolek wrote about the short-handed special teams and how they are standing up and performing at a high level even in the face of weekly upheaval.
“The Hokies have ruled out more than 20 players each week as it continues to deal with COVID-19 related issues, which has impacted special teams more than any other area on the field. “It’s pretty bad,” Fuente said after Tech’s 38-31 win over Duke. “It’s pretty bad.”
“According to Fuente, the players filling in did an “admirable job” with no major breakdowns on the coverage units, but the process of figuring out who to play has been a challenging one.”
