Gwen Walz is coming to Virginia on Friday to headline an educator appreciation event.

She is the wife of Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee for vice president.

According to her bio, Mrs. Walz has taught in public, alternative, and migrant schools and served as an administrator and coordinator in the Mankato Area Public Schools for more than two decades.

She posted a video from the Democratic National Convention singing the Mankato West High School fight song.

“This proud teacher still knows every word to the Mankato West High School fight song,” she wrote on social media. “Nothing makes my heart sing more than being with former students. Grateful they came to cheer @Tim_Walz on at the DNC this week!”

The campaign says Mrs. Walz will highlight Vice President Kamala Harris’s plan to support teachers and students.

“A longtime educator and former AFT member, Mrs. Walz will join local leaders for an Educators for Harris-Walz event ahead of Labor Day,” the Harris-Walz campaign said in a press advisory. “During the event, Mrs. Walz will highlight Vice President Harris and Governor Walz’s efforts to support educators and students – a sharp contrast with Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda, which would eliminate the Department of Education, gut public education, and rescind student debt relief.”

Donald Trump’s campaign says Democrats campaigning in Virginia, a state where Joe Biden beat Trump by 10 points in 2020, is a sign that Virginia is in play this year.

“The First Lady of Minnesota and the Second Gentleman are campaigning in Virginia on Labor Day weekend? They’re campaigning in Virginia because President Trump has turned a state Democrats mistakenly thought was safely blue into a genuine battleground,” said Jeff Ryer, a spokesperson for Trump’s Virginia campaign.

The event will take place in Manassas on Friday morning. The specific location has yet to be publicized.

Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, will be in Newport News next week for a Labor Day event.
