Democrats will keep their slim majority in the House of Delegates and state Senate after Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh won their special elections on Tuesday.
In SD-32, the district Rep. Suhas Subramanyam represented before he was elected to Congress, Srinivasan defeated his Republican opponent, Tumay Harding.
“This win is a victory for Loudoun, its families, and every Virginian across our Commonwealth,” Srinivasan said in a statement. “Tonight, we have shown that when we stand together and fight for the issues we care about, we win.”
Srinivasan won the nomination during a firehouse primary in December.
He represented District 26 in the House of Delegates since he was first elected in 2023.
He grew up in the Tamil Nadu State in India and earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce from Vivekanada College at the University of Madras. He immigrated to Virginia in 1992 to pursue a master’s degree in accounting at Old Dominion University.
He was on the state Medicaid Board under Governors Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam.
He currently works in finance and business analytics.
In HD-26, the district formerly represented by Srinivasan, Singh defeated his Republican opponent, Ram Venkatachalam.
“I am honored to represent the community that my family calls home,” Singh said in a statement Tuesday. “In Richmond, I will take on the toughest fights. I ran in this race because my two daughters have fewer rights than my wife did. Gun violence is the number one cause of death for kids. And college tuition costs have skyrocketed. Now it’s time to take on those challenges.”
Singh earned the nomination during a firehouse primary in December.
He was born in Northern Virginia after his parents moved from India in 1970. He graduated from the University of Virginia and worked for the Peace Corps in Bolivia.
Singh served in the White House Office of Management and Budget during the Obama years and also worked for Senator Chris Coons as his economic policy advisor.
“These victories help us hold our majorities and ensure we have champions fighting for our rights, strong schools, a thriving economy, and a brighter future for all Virginians,” said Speaker of the House Don Scott, D-Portsmouth. “Let’s get to work!”
