Former two-term Republican Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling provides an analysis on Donald Trump and his impact on electoral politics in Virginia. Bolling was elected to serve as lieutenant governor in 2005 and then again in 2009.
In case you missed it, Republicans are starting to blame Trump for Republican losses in Virginia. Trump also directly attacked Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin on Friday morning. Read what Bolling had to say about it all below:
“Former President Donald Trump has long been known to launch unsolicited attacks on people he views as political competitors, even those within the Republican Party. Remember “Low Energy Jeb”, “Little Marco” and “Lying Ted.” Apparently, Trump has now focused his sites on Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.
“In the following post on Trump’s TRUTH social media site, he makes fun of Youngkin’s name (“Young Kin. Sounds Chinese, doesn’t it?”), and he suggests that Youngkin could not have won in 2021 without his help.
“As I recall, Youngkin did his best to be respectful of Trump, and not offend Trump, but he also worked hard to distance himself from Trump, who has always been terribly unpopular in Virginia. It could be said that Youngkin won despite Trump, not because of him.
“Folks, I know there are a lot of people in the GOP who still love Donald Trump, but here’s the truth. Trump is an albatross around the neck of the Republican Party. The GOP needs to turn the page and move on from Trump if it wants to win in 2024 and beyond.
“Trump’s ego is legendary, as demonstrated by his unsolicited attack on Governor Youngkin, who he obviously now views as an adversary. Trump will never go away on his own, but he will have no choice if enough people simply thank him for his past service but look elsewhere for someone to carry the party’s banner into the future.
“And by the way, kudos to Governor Youngkin for not taking the bait and getting into a tit for tat with Trump. By doing so Youngkin shows his maturity and desire to be a uniter and not a divider. Those are the kind of leaders we need.”
