Update:

Governor Northam announced today that he will be issuing an executive order alongside of the State Health Commissioner Dr. Norman Oliver that limits the functioning of bars and restaurants in the Hampton Roads region.

Taking effect at Midnight on Thursday night, no alcohol can be sold or consumed on site after 10 p.m. and all restaurants must close by midnight. Indoor dining will also be limited to 50% capacity and public gatherings of more than 50 individuals are prohibited indoors or outdoors.

The new restrictions will apply to the Cities of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, Poquoson, James City County, and York County.

“While the health metrics remain largely stable in four out of Virginia’s five health regions, I am concerned about the recent increase in cases in Hampton Roads,” said Governor Northam. “These decisions are necessary to protect public health and prevent additional virus outbreaks—I will not hesitate to do what it takes to keep Virginians safe.”

Northam said this executive order is intended to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the Hampton Roads region.
