Democrats are quickly aligning behind a candidate to replace Rep.-elect Suhas Subramanyam in SD-32, while Republicans have yet to have any candidates express interest in the seat.

Speaker of the House Don Scott, D-Portsmouth, and Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell announced their endorsement of Del. Kannan Srinivasan, D-Loudoun, on Thursday, adding to the list of legislators backing his run.

“Kannan has earned deep trust in Loudoun through his dedication and effectiveness—not just because he’s a Democrat, but because he’s a problem-solver who listens, collaborates, and delivers results,” Surovell said in his statement.

Former Loudoun Commonwealth Attorney Buta Biberaj sent a text message Thursday announcing her campaign and linking to a video about it.

“She stood up to Glenn Youngkin and the MAGA-Republicans when he tried to ban books from our schools,” the narrator on her video says. “She worked to deliver progressive criminal justice reform, and saw a 32% reduction in violent crime and Buta worked to keep guns out of our classrooms and implement mandatory background checks and red flag laws.”

Biberaj lost her reelection campaign in 2023 by less than half of a percentage point despite spending 13 times as much money on the campaign than her opponent.

In addition to Srinivasan and Bibaraj, former Del. Ibraheem Samirah, D-Loudoun, Hurunnessa Fariad, Sreedhar NagiReddi and Puja Khanna have also filed to run for the Democratic nomination in this district.

Subramanyam has not declared his support for any candidate in the race at this time.

Democrats are hosting a firehouse primary on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to choose their nominee.
