May Nivar announced Monday that she is running for the Democratic nomination in a competitive Henrico House of Delegates district next year.

She is seeking the nomination in HD-57, where Del. David Owen, R-Henrico, is the incumbent. Owen won the seat last November when he defeated Susanna Gibson by two points.

“As a mother of two daughters, I feel a deep responsibility to safeguard their future,” Nivar said in her announcement. “We’re at risk of losing many freedoms, particularly the ability to make decisions about our own bodies. I’m running to protect our hard-fought rights and ensure all women have access to abortion care, contraception, and IVF.”

Nivar served on former Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s Asian Advisory Board and works at Altria.

She has the backing of Del. Rodney Willet, D-Henrico, and Commonwealth Attorney Shannon Taylor.

“In addition to protecting a woman’s right to choose, we must fully fund our public schools, expand access to affordable healthcare and prescription drugs, and stop gun violence to keep our communities safe,” Nivar said Monday. “We also need to invest in good-paying jobs and the economy, ensure equal protection under the law, and combat climate change.”

Nivar is the only Democrat who has announced their candidacy for this seat.
