Former President Donald Trump commented multiple times Thursday on the Virginia gubernatorial race — again casting doubt on Virginia’s 2020 election results and talking about candidates embracing his MAGA-following. Terry McAuliffe (D) and Glenn Youngkin (R) have less than six weeks to convince Virginians to vote for them in the race to become the next governor of Virginia.
Trump said in a radio interview Thursday morning with John Fredericks that he believes Youngkin can win this election but he first cast doubt about the integrity of the election last year. “I’ve heard bad things about their voting… very very bad things, it was largely mail-in and I have heard a lot of bad things about Virginia,” Trump said.
There has been no evidence of any voter fraud taking place during Trump’s 10-point loss.
He then continued, saying the “only guys that win, are the guys that embrace the MAGA movement.
Youngkin was pressed earlier this week to answer if he is proud to receive an endorsement from Trump. He never answered the question directly, but said he was “very pleased to get it.”
Fredericks, a conservative commentator and the former chairman of the Virginia Trump presidential campaign, said Youngkin has successfully kept both the moderates and Trump-faction of the party together so far, noting he has never seen anything like it.
Trump then commented again on the race in a Tweet-like press release.
“Terry McAuliffe was a badly failed Governor—owned by Crooked Hillary,” he said, while also linking to the article from The Hill that describes a poll showing that Youngkin has a lead among “likely voters.”
McAuliffe used the statement to try and tie Youngkin to Trump, a key tactic for his campaign in a state that Trump lost by 10 points last year. “President Trump can’t stop talking about Glenn Youngkin. We MUST reject Glenn’s Trump-style politics this November,” McAuliffe said on Twitter.
Fredericks, who predicted a Trump win in 2020 and a Youngkin win in 2021, believes the only thing that could tank Virginia Republicans this year is a federal government shutdown.
“Terry McAuliffe is a failed governor and everyone knows it,” said Christian Martinez, a spokesperson for Youngkin. “That’s why Democrats, Independents and Republicans are supporting Glenn Youngkin.”
The election takes place on Nov. 2.
