UPDATE: Abigail Spanberger wins reelection. Read more here.

As expected, it is taking an extended period of time for votes to be counted and reported in localities across Virginia. Here is an update on what is happening in Virginia as of Wednesday morning.

Vice President Joe Biden (D), U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D), Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D), and Congresswoman Elaine Luria all won reelection last night (D).

In VA-05, where many polls showed Democrats in contention for the first time since 2008, Republican Bob Good defeated Dr. Cameron Webb by a little over 20,000 votes.

Webb conceded victory to Good shortly after midnight. While this is not the outcome we hoped for, it has truly been an honor to run to represent this district in Congress. “This campaign has been a battle of ideas about how to best serve the people of our district and I cannot give enough thanks to everyone who made it possible,” said Dr. Webb. “Congratulations to Mr. Good for his victory and I look forward to continuing to engage with him as we move forward from the election in a unified way.”

In VA-07, voters went to sleep with Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger losing by 40,000 votes to her Republican challenger, Delegate Nick Freitas. However, the absentee and mail-in voting numbers from Democratic sweet spots, Chesterfield and Henrico, were reported early Wednesday morning bringing Spanberger within 800 votes of Freitas.

Henrico’s absentee numbers on Wednesday morning.

In addition, Spotsylvania has yet to report any absentee numbers as of 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Spanberger won 45% of the votes in Spotsylvania in 2018, but she has only 30% of the votes prior to the absentee and mail-in ballots being reported, which should skew in her favor likely securing a win for the one-term legislator. It is unclear when Spotsylvania will be reporting their absentee votes. If a ballot was postmarked prior to Tuesday, then it will be counted as long it arrives prior to the 12 p.m. deadline on Friday.

On Tuesday night, both Spanberger and Freitas encouraged their supporters to remain patient and wait for the results to come in.

The Virginia Department of Elections stated multiple times that they were advising local registrars to stop counting at 11 p.m. and report what they had before resuming counting on Wednesday and releasing the final total on Friday afternoon. However, several localities ignored that guidance and waited until well into the morning hours to report their numbers.
